THE CHALLENGE

As Abu Dhabi reimagined its historic port district, MiZa, into a vibrant cultural and creative destination, there was a need to envision a creative platform that could serve as a catalyst for the district’s transformation. The challenge was to define a clear purpose, strategy, and operating model for this future space—ensuring it could attract and support creative communities while remaining flexible for future growth. Without a name, brand, or built environment in place, the work required imagining what this initiative could become: a living ecosystem embedded in MiZa’s emerging identity.

THE TRANSFORMATION APPROACH

ATÖLYE joined the project at its inception, partnering with the project’s vision holders, the Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation (SHF), to refine and advance the concept. ATÖLYE’s approach focused on strategically defining the concept, positioning, and long-term role of what was initially referred to as an “Innovation Hub.” The process of arriving at the strategy was one of co-creation and collaboration with SHF, building on their existing concept and vision. Together, the team developed a purpose-driven strategy that articulated the value the space would offer to creative professionals, entrepreneurs, and the wider cultural scene in Abu Dhabi. This included a messaging framework, programming strategy, spatial vision, and governance model—all designed to inspire future designers, operators, and partners. Rather than defining a final product, the strategy created a blueprint for evolution, enabling future teams to build and adapt as the vision matured.

"The team [at ATÖLYE] intuitively grasped our vision and shared our commitment to building something meaningful. The process was collaborative, and led by people who truly understand what an emerging entrepreneurial community needs to thrive.”

Pradeep Sharma Director of Arts, Culture and Heritage Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation

"We’re glad to have partnered with ATÖLYE, who came in with a thoughtful, relevant approach and collaborated with us through aspect of the community strategy. Their work provided a strong backbone for the space and community we have today."

THE IMPACT

The strategy developed by ATÖLYE shaped the direction for what would become M_39, a key space within Abu Dhabi’s creative ecosystem. While M_39’s name, architecture, and operators came later, the early strategy aligned stakeholders and neighbors in MiZa around a purpose-led, community-driven roadmap.

THE COMMUNITY LENS

From the outset, this project was about designing for people, not just place. We envisioned the space as an adaptive platform for community-building—an environment where creatives, innovators, and cultural leaders could thrive. Our strategy centered on enabling ownership, collaboration, and long-term activation. By focusing on governance, engagement, and inclusivity, we helped seed a culture of co-creation that now lives on in its neighborhood’s growing network of changemakers.
