THE CHALLENGE
Laboratory workers at Sabancı University’s Nanotechnology Application Center were found to have limited interaction spaces and rarely ventured outside their immediate work areas. This lack of connectivity hindered collaboration, both among researchers and between the university and the industry. The challenge was to design a space that could act as a catalyst for engagement, fostering communication, collaboration, and stronger ties with the external industry.
THE TRANSFORMATION APPROACH
To address the challenge, ATÖLYE Architecture conducted detailed field analyses and observations to uncover the needs of researchers and stakeholders. Using this data, the team implemented spatial interventions designed to facilitate interaction while staying true to the building’s existing design principles. The interventions were carefully integrated to ensure clarity and legibility, aligning with the scale and aesthetic of the current space.
The design encouraged researchers to move beyond their labs and engage with their peers, fostering a collaborative environment. All modifications were implemented in harmony with the existing architectural style, ensuring seamless functionality without disrupting the original design.

THE IMPACT
The reimagined space strengthened communication among researchers and enhanced their engagement with industry stakeholders. By fostering a dynamic and inviting environment, the interventions created opportunities for collaboration and innovation. The design set a precedent for how universities can use spatial design to inspire engagement and connectivity in research environments.

THE COMMUNITY LENS
The project redefined how spatial design can enhance collaboration and connectivity among diverse stakeholders. By fostering interactions between researchers within the university and creating a bridge to industry, the design reinforced a sense of shared purpose and belonging, turning isolated spaces into vibrant hubs for collective innovation.
